City celebrates academic achievements of resilient employees

The City of Cape Town’s Training and Development Department hosted its annual Education, Training and Development (ETD) Recognition Awards ceremony on Friday, 11 June 2021. A total of 140 graduates employed within various departments at the City were recognised for their academic achievements over the past two years.
‘The ETD recognition awards ceremony was an opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate employees who committed themselves to self-improvement, despite the intense challenges and pressures posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Their resilience is admirable and necessary as we navigate these difficult times. The skills and knowledge they have acquired, assist in expanding their abilities as public servants and afford them opportunities to make a difference on their life’s journey,’ said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Sharon Cottle.
Some of the fields in which staff members have furthered their studies include Civil Engineering; Knowledge and Information Systems Management; Environment and Water Science as well as Public Management. Graduate employees were recognised at this virtual ceremony for their academic achievements across various qualification categories, which included certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Honours and Masters.
The City highlighted the top 10 achievers over the past two years, all of whom achieved cum laude in the following fields of study:

The ETD recognition awards was launched eight years ago to celebrate and acknowledge these achievements.
The City of Cape Town remains a major source of skills development in Cape Town. Each year, the City provides bursaries, training opportunities and various internship programmes to students through its ETD programme.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the City had to place a temporary moratorium on these programmes. The City is pleased to announce that the moratorium comes to an end on 30 June 2021. In the new financial year, all internal and external financial support opportunities will be advertised. External applicant advertisements will be placed on the City's website; at City Libraries and other City public facility notice boards.
Apart from bursaries, the City also has a number of strategies to provide opportunities to individuals who want to grow and create a better future for themselves. These programmes range from learnerships to Graduate Internship Programmes and job shadowing opportunities.
